He was a farmer, longshoreman in Port Arthur, TX, fur trapper, salt mine laborer, plant foreman at the Jefferson Island Salt Co., Jefferson Island Louisiana, commercial shrimper in the gulf of Mexico, and finally he became a small business entrepreneur. He owned and operated a successful gas station and wholesale tire and battery business in New Iberia, LA until his death. Rene shares a tomb with his wife Julia and her second husband Alva Bernard in the Delcambre Catholic Cemetery.

He was widely known as Jimmy. He was a lifelong farmer in Vermillion Parish Louisiana. During the early part of the 20th Century he was heavily involved with rice farming, cultivating acreage that he both owned and leased. His first wife was Eda Marie Harrington. They had three children together, Enite, Rene(Renie), and Aline. After Eda Marie's death he married Eliza Trahan, the widow of his half brother Clement Reaux. He is buried in the Delcambre, LA Catholic Cemetery.

Philippe served as a private in Baker's Regiment of the Louisiana Militia during the war of 1812 at the battle of New Orleans. He is on the roster as Philip Lachausee. Philippe shortened his surname to LaChaussee in the late 1830's when he married Marie Celeste Girouard, his second wife. His first wife having died. Philippe owned a farm in Lafayette Parish Louisiana during the first half of the 19th century. His first wife was Hortense LeBlanc. They had seven children together, an unnamed child who died at birth, Euphemie, Marcelite, Marie Marine, Philippe, Raphael, and Villcor. Hortense died and Philippe married Marie Celeste Girouard. Philippe and Marie Celeste had three children, Celestine, St. Julien, and Simonet. With this second marriage Philippe dropped de St. Julien from his surname and became known as Philippe LaChaussee. He named the first boy born from his second marriage St. Julien, who contributed his genes to this branch of the LaChaussee family.

Dr. de St. Julien came to North America as a surgeon in the French army during the French and Indian War. He eventually settled on Ille St. Jean(Prince Edward Island) . His first wife was Francoise Godin, the mother of Louise Francoise. Francoise is believed to have died in childbirth. Their daughter Louise Francoise later married Joseph Gravois the son of Rosalie Bourgeois, Dr. de St. Julien third wife. Dr. de St. Julien subsequently married Marguerite Beliveau, the mother of Pierre Philippe. Marguerite is also believed to have died in childbirth as did Pierre Philippe. Dr. de St. Julian was expelled from Prince Edward Island by the English during the 1750's. He arrived in Louisiana with his daughter Louise Francoise in 1765. He settled on the west bank of the Mississippi River near what is now Welcome, LA. He met and married the widow of Pierre Gravois(Marie Rosalie Bourgeois) at Cabannoce on 10/5/1766. They had two children Rosalie and Valentin Philippe. Dr. de St. Julien LaChaussee was probably the first doctor to practice west of the Mississippi . He practiced his profession until his death.
